Clifton Duke Hayes, Sr., a devoted public servant and beloved life-long member of the Oklahoma City community, passed away on April 29th at the age of 76. Known for his steadfast dedication to helping others, Duke lived a life defined by service, strength, and quiet generosity.
A proud Vietnam veteran, Duke served honorably in the United States Navy, embodying the discipline and commitment that would define the rest of his life.
Following his tour of duty, he continued his service in the U.S. Navy Reserves until his retirement in 1989.
After active duty, Duke joined the Oklahoma City Fire Department, where he bravely protected his community from 1972 until his retirement in 1991.
Duke wore many hats throughout his lifetime—he was a professional photographer with a keen eye for detail, a security officer who kept others safe, and a responder during hurricane relief efforts. In every role, his heart for service shone through.
He was deeply proud of his Chickasaw heritage and remained actively connected to the Chickasaw Nation throughout his life. His identity as a citizen of the Nation was a source of great pride, and he carried his tribal values of strength, service, and community with him in all he did.
But above all, Duke was a family man who loved spending time with his wife, Linda, and his three sons and their families, including 5 grand children. Duke and Linda were married for 52 years and inseparable until her passing in 2020. Those who know him best say her passing left a hole that could never be filled.
He is survived by his sons Robert Hayes and wife Shawna, and Charles Hayes and wife Briana Ponkilla; daughter-in-law Debbie Hayes; grand children Kasee and husband Jacob Colp, Abby Hayes, Jackson Hayes, Jocelyn Hayes, and Jaeger Hayes; and many loving family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Linda; parents JC and Ina Hayes; brothers Jimmy Lee Hayes and Larry Hayes ; and son Clifton Duke Hayes Jr.
A celebration of life will be held at Bill Eisenhour Funeral Home at Sunny Lane Cemetery on Monday, May 12, 2025 at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Duke’s honor to the OKC Firefighters Foundation.
