Joyce Ellen Johnson, beloved daughter of Dan and Leeda (Loetta Daniels) and cherished sister of Wendel and Pamela, passed away quietly in the home she loved in Bridge Creek. She had been in and out of hospitals and skilled nursing facilities since December 2020, and thanks to the love and care of the hospice nurses, she was able to come home in May 2021.
She is survived by her sister, Pamela, of the home. She is also survived by her paternal aunt, Faye Spears and her maternal aunts, Ann Wagnon, Linda White, Melissa Bartling, and Mary Monks.
Joyce was born at home in Stigler, Oklahoma. She lived, went to school, and worked in Oklahoma City. She attended Wheeler Elementary School, Capitol Hill Junior High, and graduated in 1969 from Capitol Hill High School.
She started her career in customer service in the 70’s at the S.H. Kress department store in Capitol Hill. When that store closed, she went to the T G & Y Family Center on S.W. 29th street and May Avenue and worked there until the early 80’s when she transferred to T G & Y National Headquarters on N.E. 36th Street and Santa Fe Avenue. She worked at the T G & Y “Help Desk” – a call center for the stores’ service desk employees who needed help with the cash registers and related equipment. She stayed with T G & Y until all of the stores were closed in 1986.
In 1987, she went to work at the Venture store on N.W. Expressway and Rockwell. She worked on the sales floor, the front service desk, and in the cash office. When Venture stores closed, Joyce decided that was “enough” and finally retired from her customer service career. She then took up the career as caregiver for her Dad when her Mom passed away in 1996.
Of all the things in her life, Joyce loved her family and home. As a member of that family, I can tell you she loved, supported, and nurtured all of us. Her joys were simple—being with her parents, caring for them, and helping them any way she could. As her sister, I can tell you she was my best friend and my rock. If not for her, I would not have been able to reach for my dreams and become a better person. When our parents died, we shared our loss and grief, and thanks to her we always had a family and home.
Joyce loved watching her favorite movies and programs from the comfort of her home. She was a big fan (and loved) Elvis Presley and George Strait. There are lots of happy memories sharing these things with her. She liked to play solitaire, crochet, and make quilts. She was the best cook—thanks to her all of Mom’s recipes for comfort foods and holiday meals were preserved. She was so much like her parents in loving her dogs and even enjoying the company of those aloof cats that came our way.
Joyce was the best sister ever. How lucky I am that she was a part of my life. I will always know the value of love and home because of her – gifts that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. Thank you, dear sweet Sis for being a part of my life. I thank God every day for letting you, our parents, and our brother be a part of my life. It has been a long journey for you, but you are no longer suffering and have finally made it to the place you love best – your heavenly Home with the Lord, Mom, Dad, and Wendel.
She is preceded in death by: Her paternal grandparents Joe and Nannie Johnson. Her paternal uncles and aunts: Earl Johnson, Leslie Johnson, Bill Johnson, Ray Johnson, and Mary Nunnelee. Her maternal grandparents Albert and Ora Daniels. Her maternal uncles and aunts: Emmett Daniels, Billy “Bill” Daniels, Albert “Dick” Daniels, Clementine Vines, and
