He proudly served his country in the US Air Force. He worked and retired from Tinker Air Force Base as an airplane mechanic. His favorite pastimes were coaching his boys in baseball, camping, hunting, training bird dogs, and gardening with his brother. He also was an active and devoted member of the McLoud Masonic Lodge for 67 years. He was a 32nd degree Mason of the Scottish Rite of the Valley of Guthrie and a York Rite member in the Capitol Hill York Rite bodies. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for Outstanding and Meritorious Service to Oklahoma Masonry in 2006.
Of all the numerous awards and accolades, Layton was most proud of his family. Left behind to cherish his memory are his wife of 65 years, Edwenta; his son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Sylvia Adair; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Alana Adair; and daughter and son-in-law, Jenny and John Ferguson; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Martha and Willard Miller; sister-in-law Ima Adair; and numerous nieces and nephews.
As a husband he will always be remembered for his deep love and devotion, as a father he will always be remembered for his unconditional love and guidance, as a Papa he will always be remembered for his big hugs, playfulness, and silly pranks.
