Matthew Wayne August was born on September 30, 1985, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to Gale Yvonne August and Kenneth Wayne August Sr. From the beginning, Matthew carried a spirit that was uniquely his own — warm, witty, dependable, and quietly intelligent.
As the second of four children, Matthew naturally stepped into a role of support and responsibility. He was the one his family could call for anything — a ride, a favor, a helping hand, or simply a moment of comfort. He showed up without hesitation, and he did it with a good heart. Helping others wasn’t something he had to think about; it was simply who he was.
Matthew had a remarkable ability to find humor in almost any situation. His jokes, his timing, and the way he could lighten a room made him unforgettable. Even in difficult moments, he had a way of reminding everyone that laughter was still possible.
After graduating from John Marshall High School in May of 2004, Matthew began building his career in Warehouse Operations. He spent three years at Vaughn Foods, where he earned his forklift certification and developed the skills that would shape much of his professional life. He later worked for Smith & Nephew in their warehouse division for several years, continuing to grow in reliability, efficiency, and hands on expertise.
Matthew also spent a short period working in the oil field, gaining experience in a demanding environment. Throughout his early adulthood, he held positions at a variety of restaurant chains, taking on those roles as in between jobs while he worked toward more stable opportunities that aligned with his certification and strengths. No matter the job, Matthew showed up, worked hard, and gave his best — a reflection of his character and his commitment to providing for himself and supporting his family.
Beyond his work and accomplishments, Matthew will be remembered most for his heart — the way he loved his family, the way he honored his mother’s memory, and the way he touched every life around him with kindness, humor, and sincerity. Though his time here was far too short, the impact he made will continue to live on in the people who loved him.
Matthew is celebrated and survived by his father, Kenneth Wayne August Sr.; his sisters, Kendra August, Simone August Turner, Christal August, Nedra August, and Kimberly August; and his brother, Kenneth Wayne August Jr. He is also survived by his brother in law, Christopher Turner.
He is lovingly remembered by his aunt, Marilyn Edwards Garcia, and uncle in law, Juan Garcia; as well as his uncle, Roman Edwards Sr., and aunt in law, Lori Edwards.
Matthew’s memory continues through his cousins Roman Edwards Jr., Myeasha Quarcoo, Miahta Garcia, Maleile Garcia, and Preston Garcia.
While he had no children of his own, his legacy lives on through the many nieces and nephews who adored him and will carry his spirit forward.
Matthew is preceded in death by his mother, Gale Yvonne August; his sister, Natasha August; his maternal grandmother, Joyce Marie Edwards; his paternal grandmother, Fronnie August; and his grandfathers, Sylvester Bullard and Sonny Edwards. Their love shaped his life, and now he rests among them in peace.
