Ruby Dail was born February 29th, 1924, to Arthur Lee & Linnia Edna (Ford) Chambers in Nocona, Texas. Ruby & her family moved to Carter, OK when she was a young child. Following the passing of her father in 1931, Ruby, her mother & siblings went to live with her maternal grandparents, Grandma & Grandpa Ford. Ruby was one of eight children & shared many fond memories growing up alongside her siblings & cousins in western Oklahoma. Ruby graduated from Carter High School & went on to attend Draughon’s Business College in Lubbock, Texas. Ruby taught typing & shorthand for 2 years at Draughon’s. She worked for various companies including Oklahoma Natural Gas & later at Emanuel Synagogue in OKC as a bookkeeper until she retired in 1987. Ruby married her husband, Roy Skelton on June 11th, 1950, in Elk City, OK. Their marriage exemplified the vows they exchanged in 1950. They spent 53 wonderful years together until Roy’s passing in 2003. Roy & Ruby lived in various places including Elk City, Seminole, Ponca City, Woodward, Midwest City, then built their final home together in Del City in 1963 where Ruby lived until 2018. Roy & Ruby welcomed their son Michael on October 1st, 1959, whom they adopted at birth. Roy & Ruby went on to welcome their niece Raylyn into their home following the passing of Ruby’s sister Edna in March of 1968. Raylyn was their daughter in every sense of the word & Ruby kept her promise to her sister to raise Raylyn & love her as her own, a promise that was clearly very easy for her to keep. Ruby & Roy were amazing parents to Mike & Raylyn, providing them an incredible childhood & countless happy memories. Ruby lived her entire life serving the Lord & encouraged others to do the same. She & her family attended St. Mathew United Methodist Church in MWC, OK for over 5 decades, where she was a member of many worship groups over the years & volunteered at St. Matthew’s Pumpkin Patch every fall. Ruby spent the last 3 ½ years of her life living at Sommerset Assisted Living in Moore. She loved the staff at Sommerset & was so thankful for the care they provided her.
Ruby enjoyed gardening, reading, cooking, crossword puzzles, word searches & most of all spending time with her countless friends & large family. But her most prized role was that of Grammy to her three grandchildren & to her three great-grandchildren. She was tickled to have 2 sets of boy/girl twins & 2 singleton boys to love on! Ruby was a phenomenal cook & left her family with many of their favorite recipes, including her famous pumpkin pie recipe that was gifted to her by her neighbor Susie in the early 1960’s. Ruby most-likely made hundreds of pumpkin pies & pie crust cinnamon rolls over the years for holidays & her family’s birthdays.
Ruby was known for being a social butterfly. She made countless friends over her nearly 98 years of life. She genuinely loved getting to know each & every person that came across her path. Always making a point to learn people’s names & as much about them as she could. Fellowship was her strong suit. Ruby had a great sense of humor & was never afraid to laugh at herself or laugh at a joke that was made at her expense, usually made by her son-in-law, Vance. Anyone who knew Ruby knows that she talked her entire life, to anyone she met. Telling stories giving priceless advice & discussing OU football & Thunder basketball. She rarely stopped talking, sometimes even while eating. Which proved to be almost dangerous on one occasion, and the phrase “Take a break Ruby!” was coined by her dear friend, Warren Alston. But she never took that break. She continued to share her stories, contagious laugh, & endless love with all that knew her until she met her Lord & savior on February 23rd, 2022.
Ruby is proceeded in death by her husband Roy Skelton, her son Michael Skelton, son-in-law Vance DeWoody, her parents Arthur & Linnia, her seven siblings: Anna Lee Chambers, Edna Lee Abbott, Louie Chambers, Billy Chambers, June Ruttman, Joyce Brown & Bob Chambers and many dear friends.
