

Walter Elmer Mathews, affectionately known as “Walt,” passed from this life on April 22, 2015 in Midwest City, Oklahoma. He was born on April 1, 1933, in Earlton, Kansas to parents Elmer and Angie Mathews. Walt graduated from Chanute High School and proudly served in the United States Army. Walt became a real estate broker and agent. He had many passions in life including family, history, and collecting. He collected sailor’s caps and lighthouses.
In many ways, Walt himself was a lighthouse. Walt always believed that a person had a lot of influence on his or her own happiness. He spent endless hours listening to and providing thoughts and opinions to those interested in improving their quality of life. He served his life as a beacon of hope for those overcoming alcoholism. He shared his message to those on the path to recovery across the entire state. His dedication to Alcoholics Anonymous will never be forgotten. His legacy and spirit will forever be cherished.
Walt is survived by his son, Michael Mathews and his wife Karen; as well as his two grandchildren, Taylor and Christian. With full hearts of gratitude Walt’s family would like to thank Alcoholics Anonymous for all the support and love they have shown.
