A native of Delcambre and resident of Lafayette, Mr. Hebert passed away on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at Lafayette General Medical Center.
Wayne was born on June 19, 1957 to the late Joseph Gabriel “Gabby” and Audrey Mae LeBlanc Hebert. He was one of six children.
Throughout life, Wayne had many jobs. His first jobs were manager of his high school football team by day and driving a wrecker truck at night until he graduated from Delcambre High School in 1977. He then opened the local Texaco gas station and later attended Louisiana State University graduating in firefighting and Hazmat training and became a Firefighter for the Delcambre Fire Department in 1978. In 1984, he graduated from the Law Enforcement Academy at University of South Louisiana and went on to work for the Vermilion Parish Sheriff Department as a deputy for the next couple of years. He then went to work offshore as a cook and in the early nineties went into business as a hot shot driver. This introduced him to cross country truck driving and his final occupation as a big rig and machinery diesel mechanic.
Wayne lived his life to the fullest and had many passions. Starting at a young age, he loved to cook, earning him awards in high school at cooking competitions. He would cook anything from stews, spaghetti, gumbos, and as a side always had fresh potato salad with tea. He also loved the outdoors, fishing being a top choice. He also loved going to the casinos, concerts, the beach (he spent many of days at Holly Beach), and taking long drives anywhere. He was always ready to go on a driving adventure, day or night, leading his daughter, April, to jokingly call him “the roadrunner".
Wayne never met a stranger, he was friends with everyone. He loved to tell stories to anyone who would listen. It didn’t matter if it was a stranger or if the story was even true, by the end of the conversation he would have had a good laugh and a new friend. Wayne will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his two daughters, April Hebert Lafleur and husband Horace and Amanda Hebert and companion Josh Butcher both of Lafayette; one grandson, Michael Joseph Lafleur; two brothers, Joseph Morrison Hebert and wife Sue of New Iberia and Kent Hebert and wife Dawn of Abbeville; and three sisters, Marie Callahan and husband Sterling of New Iberia, Carolyn Peltier and husband Steve of New Iberia, and Jo Ann Vincent and husband Wade of Abbeville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one niece, Patty Ann Callahan, who was also his god-daughter.
Pallbearers will be Kent Hebert, Morrison Hebert, Terry Johnfore, Wade Vincent, Chet Peltier, Chad Peltier, Sterling Callahan, and Josh Butcher.
Honorary pallbearers will be Horace and Michael Lafleur.
