Gertrude J. Platt

Gertrude Johanna Platt (Oma, Gigi), age 79, born in Langenselbold, Germany, living in Newport News, Virginia, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on November 18, 2014. She was German strong and fought a long, hard battle with heart and lung disease.

She was preceded in death by her father, Philip Johanes Bassermann; her mother Franciska Margret Kirsh Bassermann Gates; her brother Hinerick Bassermann; step father Ronald Gates; her husbands Arthur Mercer and Wylie Platt; her son Charles Mercer; and her grandson Donnie Mercer.

She is survived by her sister Franciska Ramsey and brother-in-law Don Ramsey, DeLand, Florida; her children Ronald Basserman and daughter-in-law Cynthia Bassermann, Denison, Texas, Carmen Butcher and son-in-law Randy Butcher, Joshua, Texas, Yvonne Fulton, Newport News, Virginia, Cheryl Taylor and son-in-law Travis Taylor , Sherman, Texas, Dennis Mercer, Lawton, Oklahoma, Don Mercer and daughter-in-law Patti Mercer, Lawton, Oklahoma, Rosa King and son-in-law Roy King, Denison, Texas, Una Medley and son-in-law Michael Medley, Newport News, Virginia, Wylie Platt and daughter-in-law Kim Platt, Denison, Texas; 25 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. She also raised two granddaughters, Neva James and Aletha Lowry, as well as a few other children she and Wylie took in.

Services are through Bratcher Funeral Home in Denison, Texas. Family night will be held on Monday, November 24 from 7:00-9:00 P.M. at Bratcher Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 25 at 2:00 P.M. at Chapel on the Hill at Cedarlawn Memorial Park in Sherman, Texas.
