Dr. Ray Smith

Ray was born to Ralph and Myrtis Jones Smith on December 23, 1935 in his beloved hometown of Gober, Texas. He was married to Norita Powell Smith for almost 60 years. They have two sons, C. Ray Smith, Jr. and wife Rachel and son Paul D. McCleary III of Houston and Mike Smith of the home.

He graduated from Gober High School, Austin College and earned his EdD from North Texas State University. Ray held coaching positions at Austin College, Comanche High School, Texas and the University of Corpus Christi, where he also served as Dean of Men.

He was a college administrator at Wharton County College and Grayson County College. He also worked as Superintendent of Schools at Bells, Texas.

Ray was involved in many church and community activities. He was a faithful member of Parkside Baptist Church where he served as Sunday School teacher and Deacon for many years.

Services will be held at Parkside Baptist Church at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, January 23 with family time visitation preceding at 12:30. Graveside services will be held at Gober Cemetery at approximately 4:30 P.M.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Parksdie Baptist Church – the “ROC”.
