David was born March 2, 1935 to Raymond and Elda McFarland in Cheyenne Wells Colorado. He had an older sister Dona and a younger brother, Robert, who both preceded him in death. His youngest brother Gene resides in Arizona.
His father moved the family to Aurora, Colorado when he was very young. He developed a love of aircraft and started building flyable models, joined the Civil Air Patrol, and learned how to fly. After marrying his sweetheart Leona Burroughs on 9 November 1954, he joined the Air Force and they began their new adventure together. During 23 years of service he worked as a training instructor, missile launch crew member, and calibration technician. He was stationed in locations such as Goose bay, Labrador, Plattsburg, New York, Rapid City, South Dakota, and Anchorage, Alaska.
After his retirement from the Air Force he took a job with the National Center of Atmospheric Research. For 25 years he worked as a calibration and aircraft sensor design technician at Jefferson County airport. This job also sent him on a few adventures to places such as Hawaii, Azores, Switzerland, Montana, and Maine.
David enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. Upstate New York, South Dakota, Alaska and Colorado allowed him to spend his time off doing these things. Dave’s family can tell many stories about their adventures while traveling.
David and Leona successfully raised five children and helped with their grandchildren during their 57 years together. He is survived by his wife, brother Gene, five children, Devra Hanson, Lynda McFarland-Vigdor, Martin, Russell and Becky, six grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
