David Alan Ringen, 37, of Denver, Colorado passed away suddenly February 4, 2023. He was born on October 28, 1985, in Rochester, New York to Alan R. Ringen and Deborah Morse Ringen who currently reside in Westbrook, Connecticut.
David graduated from Los Lomas High School in Walnut Creek, California, and earned his Bachelor of Science in Operations Research and Engineering and Master of Engineering in Computer Science degrees from Cornell University. He was employed by Hayward Baker and 3M. In college he loved following the Cornell hockey team in addition to the Capitols, Lakers, Giants, and 49ers. David enjoyed many adventures throughout his life, from backpacking in Philmont, earning his Eagle Scout, and travels to foreign destinations like England, Kenya, and Costa Rica. He was an older brother to Michael L. Ringen and his wife Leslie of Oxnard, California and Stephen W. Ringen of Roseville, California, and always enjoyed spending time with them.
In addition to his parents and brothers, he is survived by his grandmother Betsy Morse of Ivoryton, Connecticut; Aunt Tracey M. Lamothe and her husband Michael of Madison, Connecticut; Aunt Ann M. Gamble of Deep River, Connecticut; Uncle John Gamble of Old Saybrook, Connecticut; Uncle Walter E Ringen, III and his wife Debi of Brownsburg, Indiana; Aunt Constance R. Bondi of Morgan Hill, California; Aunt Cheryl S. Ringen of Melrose, Massachusetts; and many cousins; as well as his beloved dog Zoe. He was predeceased by his Grandparents Lawrence B. Morse of Ivoryton, Connecticut, Walter E. Ringen, Jr., and Shirley M. Ringen of San Jose, California; and his Uncle Leland P. Ringen of Malden, Massachusetts.
David will be remembered as a kind, thoughtful, brilliant person who proved a fierce self-advocate as he struggled to manage life with a mental illness that became problematic for him in his late 20s. Friends, coworkers and acquaintances described him as compassionate and kind, always lending a helping hand. His creative problem-solving abilities and determination helped him to live life his own way despite his challenges.
His family and friends hope that he has finally found the peace he could not find here despite his best efforts and those of his family, friends and mental health professionals. He was greatly loved and will be sorely missed. David’s parents did not hide his struggles with mental health. They would like their experience and loss to help remove the stigma surrounding mental health issues and to open the door to conversations about this common but often hidden reality many families wrestle with today.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 25th at 11:00 am at First Church of Christ in Saybrook, Congregational, UCC, 366 Main St., Old Saybrook, CT 06475.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI.org) or Brian’s Healing Hearts (brianshealinghearts.org).
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.olingerhampdenmortuary.com for the Ringen family.
