She enjoyed a wonderful 90th birthday celebration with many friends and family before departing.
Delores was born to Louise and John Harris on March 18, 1921 in Sanger, Texas and enjoyed 4 siblings. Prior to graduating from high school, she attended 26 schools. Signs of the times – during Oklahoma/Colorado dust bowls and depression years. The family worked mainly in the bakery business and Delores was a helper around the shops. ‘Home’ included Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Colorado, Wyoming, California and Oregon.
As a hardworking and responsible parent, Delores worked many jobs from administrative work, fashion model, bookkeeper, bakery helper, and who knows what else. Growing up, her best friend was her sister Bernice. ‘Bernice’ is a story all in itself – a very funny and full-of-life woman. Brothers served in the Navy and Marine Corps during WWII. All survived, but with the burden of the war in their hearts. When she was not working ‘outside’ the house, she and Rex (aka ‘Pop’) had a wonderful life full of world travel, show dogs, dance parties, bridge and basic fun.
In typical fashion, when a family member needed help, Delores was there to assist. This included many days and nights attending to her mother, sister, and brother as they aged. As a mother to Tom, she was 100% faithful and always available with understanding and unconditional love.
Her interests ranged from fishing/camping, pedigree dogs, bridge, mineral collecting, world travel, fashion clothing, modeling, church activities, flower arranging, and caring for the family from an early age.
Late in life, but not too late, she came to faith through family and Charles Stanley of In Touch Ministries. She grew to love the Lord and became an active participant at Calvary Baptist Church. Her faith gave her day to day joy and optimism.
After ‘Pop’ went to join the Lord, Delores became even more involved in church and bridge activities. More recently, her favorite activity was preparing table arrangements for the ‘Modern Matures’ at church. That activity gave her plenty of reasons to ‘shop’ – something she excelled at.
Thankfully, she led a long and active life dedicated to the people around her. She will be sincerely missed and we know she is exactly where God wants her.
Delores is predeceased by her husband Rex Gibson after 52 years of marriage and is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Elaine Hartnett of Durango, CO, and Grandchildren:
· Gavin Hartnett and Ryan Hartnett both of the San Francisco Bay area,
· Lindsey Hartnett currently living in Ireland,
· Robert and Christy Wallace of Georgia and their children Tyler, Mackenzie, Jessica, and Ryan;
· Eddie and Lisa Romero of California and their children Leonard, Alexis, and Kayla.
A memorial service will be held Monday June 20th at 10AM at Calvary Baptist Church, 6500 E Girard Ave, Denver, (303) 757-8421. Contributions may be made to http://www.intouch.org/.
