October 22, 1929 – May 19, 2025
Leo Dell Benabese, age 95, of Denver, Colorado, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2025. Born on October 22, 1929, in Springfield, Colorado, she was the beloved daughter of Ralph and Olive Preston.
Leo grew up in Baca County during the difficult Dust Bowl years, a time she often spoke of with quiet strength and resilience. She had one older sister, Joyce Brimhall. After graduating high school in Pueblo, CO, Leo went on to attend the University of Denver for two years.
In the early 1950s, Leo joined the Pillar of Fire Church where she held several positions.
After leaving the church, Leo committed herself to working at Fitzsimons Army Hospital in Aurora, CO as a civilian. She was a Supervisor and Medical Records Technician in the Tumor Registry. Her dedication to her work and colleagues left a lasting impact on those around her. While at Fitzsimons she met her husband, Pedro Benabese.
In 1958, she married the love of her life, Pedro Benabese, in Castle Rock, CO. Together they built a life centered on love, dedication, and community. Leo and Pedro made their home first in Aurora, CO and then in Denver, CO for many years.
After retiring from Fitzsimons, Leo took time to care for her husband until his passing in 1996. During her retirement, she found joy in simple pleasures — being with family and friends, piecing together jigsaw puzzles, solving crossword puzzles, reading, and watching classic westerns on television.
Leo was preceded in death by her husband, Pedro Benabese, and her sister, Joyce Brimhall. She is survived by her loving children: Vince Benabese (Mike Underhill) of Chicago, IL, and Martha Jones (Brian) of Albury, New South Wales, Australia; her cherished grandson, Josh Benabese-Berroy (Melisa), and her great-grandchildren, Josh, Evan, and Emily — all of Denver, CO.
Leo’s life was defined by joy, love, and generosity. Her warmth and humor, even in the face of life’s hardships, touched everyone who knew her.
Interment for Pedro and Leo will be held at Ft. Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado privately with family.
