Pastor Maurice Raphael Gordon, age 95, passed away on Thursday, May 22, 2025. Maurice was born in Chicago, Illinois, one of nine children born to Linnie Curtis Dahmer Gordon and Joseph Preston Gordon. He was raised on a farm in cold, southwestern Michigan.
When Maurice was 19, around the time he was drafted into the army, he received the baptism of the Holy Ghost and felt the calling on his life to preach the gospel. He entered the army as a conscientious objector and served as a medic. During his time in Germany, he was dedicated to ministry, holding chapel services.
Back home in Michigan, Maurice had his eye on the pretty piano-playing soprano at church named Doris Manning, and he prayed that she would one day be his wife. God obviously heard that prayer and this past January, they celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary! Over their years together, much to his delight, God blessed them with a growing family and he doted on all of his offspring.
Maurice became a licensed minister with the United Pentecostal Church, International when he was 30. Over the years, he planted and pastored several churches, both in Michigan and in Colorado, including serving as founding pastor of Lovingway United Pentecostal Church in Denver, Colorado where he pastored for 30 years. He didn’t just pastor a church; he loved people! He was passionate about reaching souls for Jesus and was active in ministry until his late 80s, including ministering at the Denver County Jail. Only eternity will tell how many lives he affected for Jesus!
Maurice leaves behind his wife, Doris, who lovingly cared for him during his final years, and his eight children: Kathy (Craig) Hyatt, Karla Trevino, Karen Hemmes, Rodney (Chata) Gordon, Kelly (Dean) Larson, Krystal (David) Gibson, Bradley Gordon, and Kendra (Eric) Sahs. He also leaves a shining legacy for his 20 grandchildren (one deceased), 31 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
