Born at the VA Hospital in Fort Meade, Maryland on April 20, 1936, Retha, an army brat, spent her formative years across Pennsylvania, Virginia and Tennessee while her father served overseas. She was a graduate of North York High School in York, Pennsylvania.
In 1957 Retha married Ronald B Johnson and moved to Charlotte North Carolina where she set her mind on building her love filled life. Retha worked diligently throughout her life both professionally and at home.
Retha found immense joy in a variety of hobbies and activities, including bowling, knitting, crocheting, pinochle, bingo, and most any family game. She loved camping, gardening, flowers, reading, and crosswords, and had a special affection for her pets. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she was actively involved in the churches of her communities: Providence Methodist in Charlotte, Montclair UMC in Denver, and Burn's UMC in Aurora.
Retha was a beloved matriarch.
She is survived by her son, Duane (Susan) Johnson, daughters, Renee (Lee) Weifenbach, Ricci (Kevin) Monger, Sue Johnson, five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Clarence and Ethel Gray Trivett, her husband Ron B. Johnson, her four siblings—two brothers and two sisters and granddaughter. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Retha will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her quiet strength, unwavering devotion to family, and enduring kindness will be remembered always.
