Our hearts are heavy as we share the passing of Richard Michael Cozzette, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Richard, affectionately known as “Gordo” by his childhood friends, was born on January 8, 1942, in Trinidad, CO. Richard passed away on January 18, 2025, at the age of 83, in Aurora, CO.
Richard is survived by his devoted, loving wife of 62 years, Rose M.; his children, Richard A. and Stephanie L. (husband David McNealey); and his cherished granddaughter, Michaela Rose Cozzette. He was preceded in death by his cherished son, Keith David, and his parents, Pete and Marie Cozzette.
A proud graduate of Aguilar High School, Richard pursued higher education at Southern Colorado State College, earning a Bachelor's degree in Social Studies and Physical Education. His passion for education and service led him to a fulfilling career, beginning as a basketball coach in Swink and Aguilar, CO. He later transitioned into social work, first as a caseworker in Las Animas County before taking on roles in Fremont County, where he ultimately served as Assistant to the Deputy Director. Over the course of 40+ years in public service, his dedication to the community left a lasting impact, including having the Fremont County DHS building named in his honor before his retirement.
Outside of his career, Richard enjoyed working in his yard and renovating homes. A devoted Denver Broncos fan, he rarely missed a game, always cheering for his team with unwavering loyalty.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2025,11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Maggiano's Englewood location - 7401 S. Clinton St., Englewood, CO 80112. Please wear Denver Broncos attire if you have any.
Richard's life was a testament to dedication, hard work, and love for his family and community. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
