Ron was 17 when he left high school to join the Navy. He shipped out to Siapan for the remainder of the war. He was discharged as Radioman Specialist 3rd Class. After Ron’s discharge, he returned home to finish school at Thomas Jefferson High School in Council Bluffs, Iowa. This turned out to be the smartest thing he ever did when he met Gladys June James, the love of his life. They married November 9th, 1947.
Ron worked at the Post Office in the RPO (Railway Post Office) division. When that division was discontinued, he and his family were transferred to beautiful Arvada, Colorado in January 1968. After devoting 36 years to the Post Office, he retired at the age of 55.
Ron spent his retirement spending his days on woodworking. His birdhouses were the talk of the area and he was soon creating original birdhouses and selling them. He took great pride in decorating his home for Christmas and was yearly listed in the newspaper as a “must see” home.
Ron and Gladys both loved becoming grandparents to 6 beautiful children. They reveled in the joy of loving these children without the responsibility of raising them!
Ron’s love/hate affair with sports started when they moved to Colorado that there was a professional football team here. GO BRONCOS! Then with the Nuggets and Avalanche here it was Sports Heaven! He had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s and as this drug progressed he spent more and more time in front of the TV watching one sport or another!
Ron was a loving son, husband, father and grandfather. When he passed away at the age of 88, he was surrounded by his family’s love and as evidence of the incredible legacy of humble man had created. He was always sharp as a tack, had a great sense of humor and loved to talk to anyone that would listen. His struggle with this horrible debilitating disease no longer has its grip on him and he is free to join the love of his life, Gladys. Those of us left behind will miss him horribly.
