

William E. Nelson, 73, of Aurora, CO passed away surrounded by family on Tuesday, October 31, 2017 at The Medical Center of Aurora in Aurora, CO. Complications from a couple of strokes proved to be too much for the man who has battled like a champion in the past. Bill was born in Monticello, IA on February 28, 1944 the son of James and Abigail (Kennedy) Nelson.
Bill attended Monticello High School where he graduated in 1962. After finishing high school Bill decided to follow in the footsteps of the family business and attended Gem City College in Quincy, IL. Upon completion, Bill went back to Monticello and joined his father and brother in operating Nelson's Jewelry in Monticello, IA.
On February 8th, 1964, Bill married the woman of his dreams: Jean Ann (Eilers) Nelson. They started their family and in 1967 they packed up and moved their three kids to Manchester, IA to run and operate Nelson's Jewelry on Main Street. Bill was very involved in his community which involved the Jaycees, the Manchester Chamber of Commerce, West Delaware Booster Club and served several terms on the Manchester City Council. Bill was a sports enthusiast. His favorite sporting event was whatever his kids were participating in. While in Iowa, he was a staunch Hawkeye supporter. After locating to Colorado in 1984 he became a strong Denver Broncos and CU Buffs fan. He will be remembered by those who loved him as "the life of the party" and always brought humor and jokes to help people cope with their day. He will be dearly missed.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jean Nelson of Aurora, CO; 2 children, Scott Nelson of Aurora, CO and Larry (Sherise) Nelson of Winter Springs, FL. 7 grandchildren: Kristyn, Kaleb, Matthew, Petrea, Jennifer, Kaci, and Hannah. One sibling, Marilyn (James) Felker of Hiawatha, IA and many nieces and nephews.
Bill was preceeded in death by his parents, his brother James G. Nelson and his cherished daughter Sherri Lynn Drahota.
A gathering will be held on Thursday, November 9th, 2017 from 6:30-8:30PM at Olinger Hampden Mortuary. During this time the rosary will be recited.
A memorial Mass will be held on Friday, November 10th, 2017 at 10am at Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Aurora.
Bill will be laid to rest at Olinger Eastlawn Cemetery later.
