August 3, 1942 – September 15, 2025
John “Jack” Smith, 83, of Mt. Prospect was peacefully called to God on Monday, September 15, 2025. Born in Chicago on August 3, 1942, Jack was a proud graduate of St. Viator Grammar School and St. Patrick High School.
Jack is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Linda, and their children Kelley (Amar) Dettloff, Jeanine Stantesly, Kristine (Roger) Wise, and Thomas Smith. He was a cherished grandfather to Joseph, Abigail, Brooke, Lauren, Mason, and Thomas. Jack is also survived by his brothers William (Pat) Smith and Robert (Mary Pat) Smith, along with many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Helen Smith, and his sister Betty Ann (Hank) Meyer.
Faith and family were the foundation of Jack’s life. He was an active member of St. Zachary Parish in Des Plaines, where he faithfully served for 28 years as a Deacon, having been ordained in the Archdiocese of Chicago in 1997. Jack’s calling to serve extended beyond the parish—later in life, he became a Chaplain, offering pastoral care and comfort to residents in local nursing homes and hospitals.
Jack’s strong work ethic was evident from a young age. He began his career with Jewel Food Stores in 1958, working in various Chicago-area locations. In 1975, he fulfilled a dream by opening his first of several independent grocery stores in Chicago, which he successfully operated for over three decades.
A lifelong and loyal Chicago Cubs and Bears fan, Jack also found great joy in the outdoors. He especially loved spending time with family and friends in Tomahawk, Wisconsin, where he snowmobiled, hunted, golfed, boated, and took pride in caring for the family property.
Jack will be remembered for his servant’s heart, his strength, and his deep love for God and family. He touched countless lives through his kindness, faith, and generosity, and his legacy will continue to live on in all who knew and loved him.
