on November 18, 2021.
Sue grew up with her siblings in Glen Ellyn, IL. She attended Hawthorne Grade School, Glen
Ellyn Jr. High, and graduated from Glenbard Township High School in 1955. She then attended
Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. During her childhood, she enjoyed accompanying her
Dad on his dry cleaning truck route and spending summers at the family’s cottage on
Lauderdale Lakes (Elkhorn, Wisconsin). Sue was an executive secretary in downtown Chicago
and later in the suburbs. Professionally, she held many positions, retiring after a long career in
2015. Her favorite job was with Coca Cola, where she spent over 20 years working “at her
favorite job for her favorite boss”.
Sue was a life-long loyal Cubs fan, listening to the games on WGN radio. She was a faithful
Lutheran, and through the church, worked as a Stephen Minister counseling terminally ill
patients and others in need. Sue loved celebrating holidays with her family and friends and the
traditions that went along with them. She always said she felt strongly about patriotism and
believed everyone should give back to their community and church. Over the years, she
became one of Hallmark’s best customers, sending greeting cards to family and friends for
every occasion.
Sue married her best friend, Henry K. Petter, on June 30, 2001. Together they enjoyed taking
vacations and going to their grandchildren’s many sporting events, recitals and graduations.
The ocean was Sue’s favorite place to vacation. She felt closest to God while sitting on the
sand and listening to the roar of the ocean.
Sue was a wonderful Mother to her three children. Most of all, she loved being a Grandma and was very proud of her seven grandchildren. Likewise, she took great joy in being Grandma Sue
to Hank’s grandchildren, and Aunt Sue/Susie to many nieces, nephews and close family
friends.
Sue is survived by her beloved husband, Henry K. Petter; her children Thomas (Lorrin) Wessel,
Jane Grimm and Kurt (Dana) Wessel; her grandchildren Kimberly (Aaron) Flanagan, Jeffrey
(Kristy) Wessel, Stephanie (Clint) Entzel, Ryan Wessel, Eric (Nan) Wessel, Jennifer Wessel and
John Wessel; her great grandchildren Dylan Flanagan, Zoey and Theodore Wessel, and
Gwendolyn Entzel; and her siblings Patricia Mac Whorter, Richard H. (Katherine) Irving III,
Donald (Margaret) Irving and Meghan Kieffer. She was preceded in death by her parents,
Richard Henry Irving Jr. and Meta Louise Irving.
Sue’s family would like to extend their appreciation to the Garlands of Barrington for their
wonderful care and compassion.
