Dear Precious Olsen Family, it was wonderful growing up with all of you, My mom,Maxine Hensley and I, Beth Hensley Bocock want you to know our love and prayers are with you all. We have only recently heard of your father's passing. I'll always remember his great sense of humor, his blue van (s), Ray telling us the story about "Harley" rolling down the street in a garbage bag, and of course we all loved when your mom made her waffles. Such a great man seated at Christ's Table.

CDR Olsen,  Though I knew your father very briefly you could tell that he was a man of character.  It was an honor to had talk to him during that brief time at the 2015 Navy Ball.  It is always sad to hear when a beloved father leaves his family.  Especially when that father played a big part in their upbringing and shaping their character.  You could not have asked for a better role model then Reidar (BT2) Olsen.  I read the well written tribute about him and wish that more people would have his scruples.  This world would be a better place.  Our prayer go out to you and your family and especially to your father.  May he rest in peace with God.  Fair Winds and Following Seas to a great sailor and man.

To the Olsen Family Our prayers are with you. Ray was a good friend and we have such fond memories of our friendship with Ray. He was so proud of his family and beamed when he spoke of his children and grandchildren. He was such a gifted carpenter who took his work seriously. All we have to do is look around our house and see all of Ray's woodworking skills and we will remember him always. Perry I am sorry to hear about the loss of your father.  He lived a good 9 years without Astrid by his side, and now they are together.  Today we pray for comfort and for knowledge of the work of our lord and savior, that we might glimpse into what is in store for those who have gone before us. How does an appreciative kid from the neighborhood describe, accurately, what it meant to have Mr. Olsen's friendliness available both at home and near the local baseball field (where so many of us boys gained self confidence and a sense of TEAM)?  I see his smiles, I see his blue and white Optimist baseball cap on his head, I remember his plaid shirts, I hear his accented voice, and I remember very well the love he showed toward Mrs. Olsen and toward our team.  I'm in happy tears, presently, because personally for me those were great and impactful memories for my journey through life!  To the OLSEN family, we loved you then and we love you now!!  Distance can't take that away...

Reidar served in the Navy aboard an ammunition ship during the Korea War. He and Astrid were active in the USS Wrangell Association and later in the AE Sailors Association which was early on composed of almost entirely men who served on the Wrangell. Reidar served his country well working day an night rearming ships with munitions during the Korean War. He was a quiet and gentle man but they loved to have fun and dance at the Wrangell gatherings. As the President of the Wrangell Association during those times his shipmates remember him as a dedicated worker helping the Association and a fun loving member who loved his ship. Those of us who served with him wish our shipmate, Fair Winds and Following Seas in his new journey reunited with Astrid     Jerry King, USS Wrangell
