Neil was born on March 18, 1946, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to Thurlow and Loretta Ehnis. He graduated from Dexter High School in 1964. Shortly after, he answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army. His time in the Army was a defining chapter in his life, shaping his deep sense of patriotism and unwavering commitment to the values he held dear. Neil carried that pride in his country with him throughout his life, always honoring the freedoms he believed.
Following his military service, Neil continued his dedication to protecting others by joining the Ann Arbor Police Department, where he served with distinction for 26 years, retiring as a detective. Throughout his career, Neil approached his work with integrity, courage, and a strong sense of duty. In addition to his investigative work, Neil served as a D.A.R.E. officer, visiting schools across Washtenaw County to educate young people and help guide them toward safe and positive choices. Neil demonstrated a strong commitment to his community through his active involvement in youth development programs. He served as both a Cub Master and Scout Master in the Boy Scouts, where he mentored and guided young people, helping to shape their character and leadership skills. In addition, he contributed his time as an advisor to the Ann Arbor Police Explorers. He took great pride in mentoring youth and giving back to the next generation.
Neil was a firm believer in the rights and responsibilities protected by the Second Amendment. He was a longtime member of the Chelsea Rod and Gun Club, where he not only enjoyed the camaraderie of fellow members but also dedicated himself to promoting responsible firearm ownership. Over the years, he taught numerous gun safety courses, emphasizing respect, discipline, and proper handling.
Neil was married to his beloved wife, Lois, for 18 years. The two first met while he was working as a patrol officer in Ann Arbor, and after going their separate ways, reconnected 30 years later during a chance encounter at a grocery store—a moment that brought them back together for good.
Beyond his service, Neil loved the outdoors and had a natural gift for connecting with people. He was often the life of the party, bringing laughter and warmth wherever he went. Generous and dependable, Neil would do everything in his power to help those he cared about.
