It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Arthur Rice, who died peacefully on January 5, 2026 at the age of 98. A man of resilience, service, and deep community ties, our father often reflected in his later years that he simply "had a good life."
Born in 1927, Arthur's early years were marked by the hardships of growing up in foster homes. However, with determined spirit, he struck out on his own at the age of 13 to join the military. He served his country with distinction, rising to the respected rank of Sergeant Major before returning to civilian life after the war.
Following his service, Arthur worked briefly in Digby before moving to Weymouth. It was there that he began a new chapter. He got married to Geraldine Clara Wagner and started a family. He and his father-in-law opened Riverside Motors a local service station. Arthur eventually bought out his father-in-law and became a fixture of the business, serving his neighbors and friends at the station until he finally retired at the age of 72.
Arthur was a man who believed in showing up for his community. He served as a Counselor for the Village of Weymouth and dedicated years to public safety as the local Fire Chief. Deeply committed to fraternal brotherhood, he was a member of the Masons, eventually achieving the distinguished title of Grand Master.
Above all, Arthur was a family man. He was the devoted husband of the late Geraldine Rice, who passed away two years ago. Together, they built a home and raised four children.
He is survived by his children: Brenda Small, George Rice, Cheryl Carson, and Stephen Rice. He was also a proud grandfather and great-grandfather to many. The family would also like to express their deep gratitude towards Brenda Amirault, who for many years, cared for our parents enabling them to remain in their family home well into their 90s.
Arthur was a man who "belonged to the people". A friend to many, a leader to others, and a lover of life. His journey from humble beginnings to a patriarch of his community will remain an inspiration to all who knew him.
A service to honor Arthur's life will be announced.
