Born on October 26, 1938, in the serene setting of Sheffield Mills, Verna was the beloved daughter of Allister and Harriett Irving. Her early life was marked by resilience and responsibility, stepping in to raise her siblings after her mother's untimely death when Verna was just 13. This experience shaped the remarkable woman she became—a pillar of strength, guidance, and love.
Verna married her first husband, Maurice (Tyke) George, on January 19, 1957. Together, they built a life and family in Digby, Nova Scotia, where they welcomed six children. Their shared journey was tragically cut short by Tyke’s passing in 1984, a loss that Verna bore with grace and fortitude.
Years later, Verna found love again with Bob Handspiker, lovingly known as Pookie. They married on August 12, 2017, and although their time together was short, it was filled with unforgettable moments. They built a cottage, shared laughs, and created lasting memories with family and friends.
Verna is predeceased by her first husband, Maurice; her son, Kevin; son-in-law, John Fortune; her parents, Allister and Harriett Irving; and her sisters, Ruth, Lydia, her twin, Velma; brothers, John and Bill.
She leaves behind her devoted spouse, Bob; her loving children—Tammy (Rustin), Sharon (Terry), Karen, Nancy, and Wendy; her treasured grandchildren—Rebecca (Brent) Canning, and Neil Wilson; and her adored great-grandchildren—Dylan, Ian, and Kaidan. She is also survived by her stepdaughter, Kim (Andy) Williams and step-grandson, Mitchell; her sister, Elaine Burton; her sisters-in-law, Cealy (Vince) MacDonald and Wanda George (Bill); brother-in-law Larry, numerous nieces and nephews; and her special friends from her beloved card group.
Even with limited formal education, Verna’s dedication to caring for others shone brightly. She took immense pride in becoming a Certified Care Aide through Tideview Terrace, where she worked for 19 years, touching countless lives with her kindness and generosity. In retirement, her spirit of service continued, always extending a helping hand to those in need.
Verna was deeply involved in her community, contributing to numerous organizations and events in Digby, including St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church, The United Baptist Church, Seniors Cards, Spring Fling, and the Digby Food Bank.
Known far and wide as the Skipbo Queen, Verna’s competitive spirit and sharp mind brought joy to many game nights. Her earlier years were filled with creative pursuits like ceramics, stained glass, and tole painting. She had a green thumb, tending to beautiful gardens in Marshalltown and Parker Drive—a love she passed down to her daughters. Every evening, she and Bob shared a game of crib, a ritual brightened by her playful recounting of that elusive 29 hand.
Verna’s legacy is one of love, strength, and unwavering support. Her smile could light up a room, and her culinary talents—especially her bread, donuts, and date squares—will be fondly remembered by all who had the pleasure of tasting them. Her great sense of humor and the ability to correct with just a look were legendary traits among her loved ones.
