

Arnold Murray Schwartz, born September 1, 1926 in New York City, passed away on December 26, 2025, in Jacksonville, Florida at the age of 99. Known to his family as Moishe, Arnold was the youngest of four children born to Isaac and Rebecca Schwartz. Raised in the Lower East Side by immigrant parents, Arnold’s early life was shaped by the Great Depression, instilling in him resilience and resourcefulness. Arnold attended Seward Park High School before he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served honorably in World War II, first as an artilleryman and later as a surgical medical technician caring for troops in a military hospital in the Pacific Theatre. He earned recognition and medals for Army of Occupation, Asiatic Pacific Campaign, Good Conduct and World War II Victory Medal.
Post-war under the GI Bill, Arnold, who grew up with a fascination in science and technology, studied Engineering. He later built a distinguished engineering career at the Martin Marietta company (predecessor of Lockhead Martin) that included contributions to NASA’s Gemini, Mercury and Apollo space missions, and a long successful tenure in Materials Reliability Engineering at IBM.
Outside of work, Arnold had many interests. He was an avid photographer and stamp collector, excelled at bowling, and was continually experimenting with gadgets and building things. In his younger years, he was an enthusiastic bicyclist. He shared his technical skills through hands-on activities, including helping with science projects, teaching craft skills, and participating in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Indian Guides. He was also deeply supportive of his wife’s love for art, traveling together and taking photographs that served as subjects for her paintings.
Arnold was married to Sandra Schwartz for 53 years until her death in 2013. Previously he’d married Cynthia Horowitz, with whom he had a son, Ned. He is survived by his children, Ned (Betty), Susan (Jeff) and Todd, and his grandchildren, Melissa and Sarah Neadle and Adam, Marc and Seth Schwartz. He was predeceased by his siblings, his wife Sandra, his son David, and his former wife, Cynthia.
A funeral service will be held at I.J. Morris, located at 21 East Deer Park Road, Dix Hills, NY 11746, on January 2, 2026, from 10:30 am to 11:30 am. The committal service will take place at Calverton National Cemetery, Wading River, NY 11792, on January 2, 2026, from 12:30pm to 1:00pm.
