November 27, 1925 – December 15, 2025
Gertrude Gotthelf, a woman defined by her strength, generosity, love for the arts, and her unwavering devotion to her family, passed away peacefully on December 15th, 2025, surrounded by family. She was 100 years old.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Gitty was the youngest of 11 children born to Ida and David Hyatt. Growing up as one of the five surviving siblings, alongside her two brothers and two sisters, Gitty learned early on the importance of family bonds – a value she carried with her for the rest of her life.
In 1946, she married the love of her life, Irving Gotthelf. Together, they shared 51 beautiful years of marriage, building a life that took them from Brooklyn to Kew Garden Hills and eventually to Long Island.
Gitty was a true New Yorker who embraced everything the City and Long Island had to offer. She worked in the city, enjoyed attending the theater, opera, dance, and had a deep appreciation for music and life-long learning. She loved travelling and the simple pleasure of a good meal at a favorite restaurant or sitting by the water.
At home, she was a formidable Rummy Q player, though her greatest joy was never found in a hobby, but in the people around her. She cherished her friends and family was everything.
She is predeceased by her beloved husband, Irving, and her loving daughter Sharyn. Her legacy lives on through her daughters Donna and Andrea, her 10 grandchildren; and her 9 great-grandchildren, all of whom were the lights of her life.
Gitty will be remembered for her resilience, her courage, and the warmth she extended to her expansive family. She leaves behind a century of memories that will be cherished by all who knew her.
A Graveside Service will be held at the Beth Moses Cemetery in West Babylon, New York on December 19, 2025, commencing at 12:30 PM.
Immediately following the interment, everyone is invited to the Sweet Hollow Diner at 100 Broadhollow Road, Melville NY 11747 for a meal of condolence.
