Lucille R Dresner, formerly of Franklin Square, New York, passed away peacefully on May 7, 2020 in Scottsdale AZ with her daughter and son-in-law at her side. Lucille was a loving and caring person who gave of herself freely to help others. Her smile could light up a room, and along with her great sense of humor easily made friends with everyone she met.
Lucille was the younger of two daughters born to Arthur and Gertrude Kurus on July 6, 1926 in Seattle, Washington, a place she always remembered fondly. After graduating Garfield High School, Lucille became a USO volunteer in Seattle during WWII. That is where she met Arty (Arthur Dresner) who was in the Army Air Corps and was stationed in Seattle for a flight engineer training program for B-29s. After a 4½ month courtship (during which time Arty met Lucille’s parents who liked him immediately) Arty was deployed to India with the 40th Bomber Group.
Through their correspondence over the next two years. Lucille and Arty fell in love. At the end of the war, Arty was discharged on the West Coast and he went straight to Seattle to propose to “LuLu” as he called her. They were married on Dec 20th by a justice of the peace. They then headed to New York City (Arty’s hometown) and were married a second time by a Rabbi in a religious ceremony on Dec. 30th. Lucille worked as a data entry clerk while Arty attended City College of NY. Arty graduated in 1950, after which they moved out to Franklin Square, Long Island and started a family of three children (Shelley, Toby and Larry).
Family events, education and religious practice was a priority for Lucille and Arty to ensure their children were welleducated, participated in religious holidays and observances, and attended and graduated college. Among Lucille's proudest memories were attending each child's Bar/Bat Mitzvah and College graduations. Summer vacations were also quite memorable, with extended family camping trips up and down the east coast of the US, combining fun and historical site-seeing each year, culminating in a cross-country family camping trip in 1969.
Lucille went back to work once the children were grown and retired in 1991 after 23 years with Nikon. Arty retired from AIL Systems in 1990. Lucille and Arty became active members of the Franklin Square Seniors and took courses and trips throughout the US and the world with Elderhostel. Lucille served as Sisterhood President of the Nassau Community Temple, and both Lucille and Arty served on the boards of Nassau Community Temple and Temple Emanu-El of
Lynbrook. Lucille enjoyed listening to music, concerts and plays / shows. She and Arty were members of a Theatre Group in NY where they enjoyed going to Broadway and off-Broadway shows in NYC. A major life achievement for Lucille was to finally be Bat Mitzvah in her adult life, as she did not have the opportunity to do so in her teens. Lucille regularly attended Bible Study with husband Arty at Nassau Community Temple to achieve this honor. Lucille also enjoyed crossword puzzles (NY Times), word-puzzle books, and arts and crafts and devoted a lot of her passion crocheting afghans that were donated to AIDS patients through Temple Emanu-El of Lynbrook.
Lucille was preceded in death by her loving husband Arty and her sister Sylvia, after which time Lucille moved into assisted living in East Meadow NY and then to Scottsdale AZ. She is survived by her three children Shelley (Paul), Toby (Edward) and Larry (Randi), two grandchildren Stephen and Rebecca, and an extended family of nieces and nephews. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, funeral services will be private on Long Island. The family wishes to thank Hospice of the Valley and Belmont Village in Scottsdale for their loving care of our Mother over the past two and half years.
