It is with deep sorrow and much love that we announce the passing of Martin Fred Mertz, beloved husband of Selma Ethel Mertz (who pre-deceased him after 55 years of marriage). He passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on November 15, 2022.
An eternal optimist, known to most as Marty, Zeide, or ‘Za’, he loved every day of his life whether it was serving his country as a decorated World War II Air Force navigator, excelling as Senior Partner and Head of Banking Practice at Peat Marwick and Mitchell, as consultant to Republic National bank and as Chairman and CEO of Williamsburg Savings Bank or stealing the dance floor with Selma, the love of his life.
He was a charitable, charismatic and loving man who was an inspiration to all who were lucky enough to share time with him. He leaves behind a large and devoted family, his daughters Diane Mertz-Hart (and husband Richard Hart), Wendy Palmisano (and husband Tom), Kathy Weinman and Amy Weinman (and husband Stuart Allen); son Jamie Mertz (pre-deceased); grandchildren Sarah Mertz Hart and Mark Harvey, Rachel Mertz Hart and Dan Mrozowski, Carrie and Mike Merlo, Erin and Will Berry, Jessica Laskowski and Kevin Rea and Sam Allen; and great-grandchildren Ava, Aiden, Estelle, Ellie, William, Nico, Graydon, Eva and Gus.
