As Mary’s son, I want to express how lucky I feel – lucky to have had a mother who accepted me as I am. This is a rare and precious thing, and I realized that early on. A mother is the first love. She is the eternal love. There is no other like her. That’s why this is a dividing day. The painful separation from our mothers at birth is what pushes us, crying, into our own independent life. Yet at the same time, we see the world from our earliest moments through our mother’s eyes. We look to her for support, approval, encouragement and inspiration. My bond with her was a filament connecting me to Creation, an invisible umbilical cord that has now been burned off. In that sense, I have now been born, crying, a second time.

We will all need to redefine what life means to us now. For my part, I must redefine what it means to go out into the world, to explore its farthest reaches and bring a little piece of it home to show. Because what is home now? What is home, if not her?

What I recall most in recent years is how my father dedicated his life to caring for her. He taught us the meaning of patience, the meaning of constancy. He spared no effort. He worried over every little thing, making sure she didn’t fall, holding her steady when she stumbled, guiding her up and down the stairs, cooking for her, keeping the house clean, indulging her occasionally, and, when necessary, tolerating her. He made sure she had every opportunity to be safe and to thrive. And now, nothing can hurt her. She is beyond danger at last. My prayer today is that Dad takes some comfort in that, and maintains that same nurturing spirit and attention to detail, this time for himself. 

Words are inadequate to express the sum of a human life. We who survive her, who loved her and were loved by her, we constitute that sum. So let us embody her legacy of limitless devotion, and honor her memory by going forward with her in our hearts, living our best lives.

Caroline, Sophie, Bea and Teddy

Grandma was one of the sweetest, most caring people I knew. As the oldest grandchild, I was lucky  to know her the longest. While much of my time with her was limited by long distance, it never fazed her.  It didn’t matter how far away we lived she always made time for us.

I remember laughing as he fought for the iPad with grandpa sometimes just grabbing it from him while we FaceTimed.  She always wanted to be the first to hear about our lives, my siblings and what we were all up to.  Even just talking to her we had fun and I’ll always  remember the time we spent together.

She was and still is the best grandmother in the world and I wouldn’t have asked for anyone else to be the granddaughter of.  I thought that I’ll never get to see her again, it’s hard to put into words how I feel.  All that I can say is I’m going to miss her so much.  I will try to not be sad because I know all she wanted was for me and all of my siblings to be happy and feel cared for.

Even though she is gone now, I know she is still here watching us just like she did since I was a baby.

Part 1

When I think of Mary, it is in her love for her kids, and her 4 grandkids.  As her son-in-law I had the opportunity to see both her pride and happiness in being a grandma.  I am flooded with loving and warm memories of her reading to them, doing puzzles with them, dancing ballet in the living room, singing the ABC song, playing with the Little People playhouse, watching the same Sesame Street episode repeatedly with the same enthusiasm as the first time, holding their hands at the zoo, and feeding the ducks at the park.  When they were little, more than once I looked on as she happily wore a princess crown upon request during their tea parties.  Mary would patiently play the same game over and over again because this is what one of the grandkids wanted to do.

Stan and Mary flew from New York to Oregon as often as health allowed, and several times just to celebrate a birthday.  I can still see both of them in birthday hats with big smiles on their faces.  Grandma loved to listen or be silly with our kids, while Grandpa, always the teacher still loves to educate and introduce them to new experiences.  

Mary could have tremendous insight into difficult situations.  She gave Jen and I very sound advice many times that we both trusted and valued.  I can’t think of a single time that we asked Mary for her input that we didn’t get something helpful in return.  It was comforting when Jen would relay to me that her mom thought we were on the right path, because time proved that she was always right.


Part 2

When I first came into the family I was just beginning treatment for cancer.  I was struggling with my treatment options being taken away.  Stan and Mary were out visiting us at the time, and they were ready to march into that oncology clinic and demand that I get the best treatment available.  

I love how Mary loved her daughter, my wife.  I know that Jen never doubted the love of her parents, even when younger and they didn’t see eye to eye.  I see Jen loving our kids in the same way.  There is no way my kids doubt the love of their mom.

The sudden loss of Mary is absolutely heartbreaking for our family.  I just hope she felt as much love as she gave.

I miss you.  Thanks for playing Pusheen with me this summer.

When I think of my grandma I think of the patience and support she always had.  Whether it was talking about cars or just checking up, she always made every conversation better than the last.   I also think of my grandma for her generosity she had when sending birthday cards to me and letting my family have the experience of going to Disneyland.  

Everything that I think of my grandmother always contributes to the statement that she was a great person and will forever be in my heart.

I remember how Grandma would sit behind me and listen to me play the piano.  Grandpa taught me how to play.  Grandma would always play cards with us or stuffed animal games.  She always found a way to make us laugh and smile.
