

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 23, 2010, at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Joyce Whiting officiating. Burial will follow in Gates of Heaven Cemetery with Byrd Funeral Home on West Main Street directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 9:45 until 10:45 a.m. on Thursday prior to service time.
Mr. Herring was born August 26, 1952 in Gadsden, AL and lived the early years of his life there. Following graduation from Carver High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp and served one tour in Vietnam. He later attended Troy State University. Mr. Herring was employed with the Alabama State Troopers and The Alabama Bureau of Investigation for a total of 25 years. Following his retirement with the the State, he worked with the Geneva County Sheriffs Department for ten years prior to his retirement in October of 2010. Mr. Herring was a resident of Black for the past ten years.
He is predeceased by his father, Frank Herring, Jr. and a brother, James Herring.
Survivors include a son, Chadwick J. Bishop of Long Beach, CA; two daughters, Sharla G. Herring and Carmen D. Herring, both of Dothan, AL; a granddaughter, Genesis N. Cooper of Dothan, AL; his mother, Margaret L. Lightsey of Gadsden, AL; two brothers, Douglas A. Herring (Lois) of Battle Creek, MI and Roderick Herring of Buffalo, NY; a sister, Sudealia Douthard of Gadsden, AL; the mother of his children, Claudette Herring of Dothan; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of friends and family also survive.
The Geneva County Sheriff’s Department will serve as pallbearers.
