Betty was born on November 18, 1933, in Whitesburg, Georgia, to Hugh Raiford Watkins and Florence Holloway Watkins. Her early years included moves that shaped her resilient spirit. She first moved to Atlanta, then to College Park, and later to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. After the war began, Betty and her mother returned to the contiguous United States, where Betty continued to grow into the devoted, family-centered woman she would always be.
When Betty was twelve years old, her sister Janice was born. Janice meant the world to her, and Betty treasured her role as a big sister throughout her life.
In 1964, Betty met Leo Belcher at church, beginning a love story rooted in faith and companionship. They were married on June 19, 1965, and made their home in Ben Hill, Georgia, before moving to Douglasville in 1972, where they built a life and raised their family.
Family was always the most important part of Betty’s life. After her youngest child, Alice Raeanne, began kindergarten, Betty entered the workforce, dedicating herself to the Douglas County Board of Education from 1975 until her retirement in 2000. Her sense of responsibility and organization were evident in all she did. Later, she lovingly cared for her mother until her passing in 2005, a final and profound expression of her devotion.
Betty found joy in the quiet pleasures of life. She enjoyed cross-stitching, researching family ancestry, and playing computer games. She was known for being exceptionally organized, a trait that reflected her thoughtful and steady nature.
Above all, Betty will be remembered for her deep love of family, her dependability, and the care she gave so freely to those she loved. Her life was one of dedication, kindness, and enduring connection.
Ms. Belcher is survived by her daughters, Amy Belcher and her spouse, Dena Callahan and Alice Lowry and her grandson, William Raiford Thomas Lowry. She was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, Leo Belcher; parents, Hugh Raiford Watkins and Florence Holloway Watkins and sister, Janice Annette Watkins.
The family will receive friends Thursday, January 15 from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Whitley Garner Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home chapel at 2:00 pm followed by interment at Sunrise Garden of Memories.
Whitley Garner at Rosehaven is honored to be entrusted with the arrangements of Ms. Betty W. Belcher.
