Joe Metcalf, age 74, of Powder Springs, Georgia passed away Wednesday, August 11, 2021. He was born June 29, 1947 in Roswell, New Mexico. Joe met Sarah when she was 11 years old. He would push his niece, Diana, around the block in her stroller just so he could pass Sarah’s house and see her. Joe graduated from Jackson High School in Jacksonville, Florida, and then joined the US Army and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. After returning from the war in November 1967, he kept a promise that he would marry Sarah, his childhood sweetheart, if he returned home safely. On January 2, 1968 Joe kept that promise and married Sarah. He worked for Cemex, a cement building material company, and retired as a Regional Manager, designing and constructing many bridges in multiple cities. Joe loved his family and adored his wife and daughters. According to Sarah, Joe was the absolute best husband and father. She said even after 53 years they still loved each other dearly. Joe was very passionate about muscle cars—especially his Corvette, even though Mustangs were his favorite. He was particular about his cars, as well to the point that no one could touch them other than the door handle. Joe knew the ins and outs of cars and would even assist his daughters with repairs over the telephone. He loved going to Summit Racing. In his spare time, Joe enjoyed putting puzzles together and watching movies—especially War movies with his girls.
He was preceded in death by his father, Lee Metcalf; mother, Louise Gilmore; and a sister, Janet Brown.
Those left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 53 years, Sarah Metcalf; daughter and son-in-law, Tonia Chavez and Valentin; daughter, Jodi Metcalf; sister, Sandra Clyatt and husband Howard; brother, Howard Metcalf and wife Tammy; brother, Kevin Metcalf and wife Jennifer; two grandchildren, Joseph Metcalf Prieto and Christen Prieto Corboy and husband William; several nieces and nephews; as well as other family members and friends.
