Raised in the church, Janis received Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior, and was baptized at Union Second Baptist Church in River Rouge. Janis was guided by her faith throughout her entire life serving as a church parishioner, singing in church choir(s), and serving on mother’s boards and other leadership positions within the church.
Janis graduated from River Rouge High School in 1968, and then went on to attend Eastern Michigan University where she received her Bachelor’s Degree. She continued into an early career as a teacher for nearly a decade in Home Economics. Guided by her passion, Janis then went on to work for Whirlpool as a Marketing Educator.
In 1982, Janis married George Westfield, and soon after, the union bore their only son Gerwin. George and Janis were married for 28 years until George’s passing in 2010. Janis had a number of passions including playing card games, board games, dominoes, or anything relatively competitive as forged by being one of eight siblings. She also enjoyed traveling, camping, and being outdoors with family and friends. Spending quality time with family, particularly spoiling her grandchildren, was her most recent passion.
The embodiment of a true warrior, Janis was a 32 year survivor of breast cancer. After defeating the challenges cancer presented, she carried this same mentality into her battle with heart failure asking for rehab tips and exercises until the end.
On Sunday, July 30, 2023 Janis peacefully departed this life. She is survived by her son, Gerwin; daughter in-law Kate; grandchildren Maya and George II; two sisters Maria (Eric) and Gwendolyn; and a host of many close relatives and friends. Janis was welcomed home by her parents; husband George; sisters Barbara, Verniece, and Alberta; and brothers Clarence and Michael.
