Robert R. (Bob) Krummen, 78, of Columbus, Ohio passed away on March 22, 2023, after a courageous battle with corticobasal syndrome, in the arms of those he loved. He was born on January 10, 1945, in Covington, Kentucky to the late Jerome and Helen Krummen. Bob had three great loves in his life – family, community, and baseball. His love of baseball started young, as he was an accomplished athlete. Later in life, Bob could regularly be found catching a few innings on TV of his hometown team, the Cincinnati Reds, or his adopted team, the San Diego Padres.
After graduation from college, Bob served honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, earning special citations in communications security and cryptography, including the 1971 Commanding General’s Citation for “exceptional” service, “reflecting great credit upon himself, this command, and the United States Army.”
Following the war, Bob met the love of his life, Rita Menke. A guitar-playing war veteran and gentleman, he swept her off her feet. They married on April 15, 1972.
Bob’s true devotion was for Rita and their family. For years, Bob was a regular for his kids at school events, sports, plays, fundraisers, and other activities. In later years, he did the same for his grandkids. So strong was their commitment to family that following the birth of their first child, they never took another vacation that did not involve their children (4) or their grandkids (10). Bob’s unquestionably favorite destination involved family time on the sunny beaches of Destin, Florida.
Bob was always highly involved in cultivating his community. For decades, he served as a leader for both the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. He served on the Xavier University Alumni Association, including as President of the Columbus Chapter. Bob was involved in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, teaching boating safety and keeping boaters safe in Columbus’s local waterways. He was particularly proud of his work with the St. Andrew Council of the Knights of Columbus, where he was a charter member, the Charter Financial Secretary, and a former District Deputy.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Rita, and their children David (Lori) Krummen, Paul (Kaylyn) Krummen, Rob (Louise) Krummen, and Kathy (James) Wayman. Bob will be deeply missed by his beloved grandchildren Carrie, Amy, Steven, Collin, Theo, Ellen, Everett, Henry, Emily, and Rose. Bob is survived by his sister Jan Long, his brother Bill Krummen, and many, many other loving family members.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 15, 2023, from 2-2:30pm at Schoedinger Dublin; 5980 Perimeter Drive, Dublin, Ohio 43017, followed by a visitation from 2:30-6pm. All faiths are welcome to a Memorial Mass to be held in Bob’s honor on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at 10:30am at Holy Spirit Parish, in Newport, Kentucky 41071.
In lieu of flowers, his family asks for donations to be made to either The Foundation for PSP| CBD and Related Brain Diseases (www.psp.org) or the American Heart Association (www.heart.org/donate).
