Bert was born in the hard scramble neighborhood of 39th and Michigan Street to Swedish immigrants Erik and Anna on Nov. 13, 1918. He survived spinal meningitis at the age of 5, but was told he would never walk again. A tough grandmother would have none of this and forced him to walk.
Uncles John and Ole introduced Bert to baseball and it became a big part of his life. He played for the West End American Legion, and in 1938, pitched Elim Church to the city championship in the tough Commercial Bar League.
Into the late 50’s, he was still among the strikeout leaders. The death of his father in 1934 forced Bert into the workforce. He worked for Grand Bakery until its close in 1952. Having worked part-time for Bell Bros Funeral Home, he joined them full time in 1952, as a funeral director. He would spend the next 31 years there.
On Oct. 26, 1946 Bert married Doris Anderson in Elim. They spent the next 63 years in West Duluth.
Bert was the last surviving member of the Bayfront Boys Club and probably the last of the Old City Volunteer Fire Fighters. He proudly carried his badge to the end.
Bert was a member of Elim Lutheran Church for 91 years and sang in the choir for over 60.
Bert was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Ellen; and brother, Vern “Stub.”
He is survived by his wife, Doris; son, Richard (Linda) all of Duluth; daughter, Sue (Byron) Anderson of Missoula, Montana; Granddaughters, Erika Dooley of Ft. Peck, Montana and Alisa Hayes of Bend Oregon.
To sum it all up, Bert loved his family, fire trucks, dogs and baseball. He was a friend to all he met.
A Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Funeral Service Thursday, June 17, 2010 in Elim Lutheran Church. 6101 Cody St. Pastor Jim Hagen officiating. Interment will be in Oneota Cemetery. Please leave a memory of Bert or words of support for the family at www.BellBrothersFuneralHome.com
