Tim was born Jan. 18, 1937 in Duluth, a son of Charles and Mary (Murphy) Birman. He graduated from Central High School in 1955. He served in the Naval Reserves from 1955 to 1967. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1964 from UMD and his Masters of Science in Teaching from UWS in 1973.
Tim excelled at many things, but was a truly gifted swimmer. He swam competitively at regional, state, and national levels from 1955 to 1979, winning a cabinet full of medals and honors, and setting many pool records that still haven’t been broken.
He was involved in various community activities and athletics in Duluth and Proctor, but will best be remembered as the junior high science teacher and swim coach for Proctor High School for 25 years.
Husband, father, brother, grandfather, teacher, coach, and friend, he is survived by his wife of 45 years Mary Lou (Steen) Birman; daughter Suzy Chapman, daughter Nancy (William) Nash; son Joseph (Denise) Birman; daughter Jane Chapman; son Timothy (Laura) Birman; his brother James Birman; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
There will be an informal memorial service, or “Memory Party,” held in his honor at The Wok N Grill family restaurant, 520 3rd Ave, in Proctor on Sunday, July 29, from 2 to 6 p.m. To leave a memory of Tim or words of support, please visit our website at www.bellbrothersfuneralhome.com
