

Ed Liebe, 83, of Duluth passed away in his home Saturday, February 28, 2015 surrounded by his family. Ed was born on April 9, 1931 in Jamestown, North Dakota. He was the son of Carl and Monica (Cichos) Liebe.
In 1949 Ed graduated from Jamestown High School. While in high school he served three years in the North Dakota National Guard and played football, basketball and baseball. After high school, he served in the United States Marine Corps and received an honorable discharge in 1954. He attended UND from 1954-1957 and received a degree in Civil Engineering. On June 15, 1957 he married Arlene Stelter. He worked for the California Highway Department for one year and then moved to Brooklyn Center, MN to work for the Minnesota Highway Department. In the early 1970's, Ed was promoted to Assistant District Engineer in Duluth and was in charge of construction. Some of his major projects included the freeway through Duluth, Piedmont, road improvements and 2 tunnels on the North Shore and more. He retired in 1994.
Ed and Arlene traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada. They went to the Hawaiian Islands to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary and returned there for 6 more extended vacations. They also enjoyed 3 Caribbean cruises. For their 50th anniversary they traveled to Italy and Greece.
He was baptized at St James Catholic Church in Jamestown, ND and was confirmed on April 11, 1976 in Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church. He was an active and dedicated member of Shepherd of the Hills and enjoyed serving the church in many ways.
Ed is survived by his wife, Arlene, of 57 years; his children, Michael (Carolyn) Liebe, Julie Cox, Jennifer (Kerry) Swendsen, and Elizabeth (Richard) Erickson; and 9 grandchildren, Ellen, Carl, and David Liebe; Cullen, Laurel, Erin, and Brandon Swendsen; and Cassandra and Ashley Erickson.
Visitation: 5:00 -7:00 p.m. Friday March 6, 2015 at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 802 Maple Grove Road. The visitation will continue from 10:00 until the 11:00 a.m. Memorial Service Saturday, March 7, 2015 at the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Shepherd of the Hills Church building fund. A time of lunch and fellowship will follow in the fellowship hall of the church.
