

Leona was born September 16, 1913 in Duluth to John and Carrie Michels.
Leona attended and graduated from Central High School in 1931. On September 20, 1941 Leona married Jacob Zalar at her parent’s home in Duluth. She and Jacob lived and raised their daughter and two sons in Duluth. Leona was active in Central Avenue Methodist Church and Asbury United Methodist Church women’s circle. She was a member of the Silent Seven, Stitch and Sew, PTA, and a Girl Scout Volunteer. Leona loved to read, was a great story teller having an excellent memory for both stories and poems. She had a diary where she faithfully kept all the secrets of her family’s life.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jacob; grandchildren, Megan and Tyler, great grandson, Drew; sister, Lillian Amundson; brother, Clyde Michels.
Leona is survived by daughter Carole Pearson of Duluth; sons, Jim and Gloria Zalar of Cambridge, and Robert of Duluth; three grandchildren, Carrie Klosowski of Duluth, David Klosowski of Hibbing, and Sara Pearson of Duluth; five great grandchildren, Britny Bergson, Nolan Leeson, Zoe Worgren, Collin and Melody Albinger; many nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 4:00 pm - 7:00 p.m. Sunday, June 8th at the Bell Brothers Funeral Home and from 10 am until the 11 am Memorial Service on Monday, June 9, 2014 at Asbury United Methodist Church, 6822 Grand Avenue, with Rev. Sharon K. Rigby Osborn officiating. Inurnment at Calvary Cemetery at a later date.
