Phyllis graduated from Central High School in 1957. She married George Jauss and together they had four children. She later married Richard (Dick) Stepp, and they formed their own "Brady Bunch". Phyllis worked as a bank teller, a grocery store clerk, but she really found her passion working in the mental health field. She spent many years working at The Harmony Club in Duluth, as well as the Human Development Center. She continued this work with her son at Carlson Hall. She provided support and compassion to people with mental health issues for many years.
Phyllis and Dick loved to travel. Together they visited places like the Canary Islands, the Bahamas, and Hawaii. They made frequent trips to Las Vegas with friends and returned several years to a special place in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. After retirement, they spent years wintering in Mission, Texas. In addition to traveling, Phyllis and Dick enjoyed many camping trips with their family. Phyllis loved gardening and had a real green thumb. She was also quite the bargain shopper and could never drive past an auction or garage sale sign.
