May 9 1951 – April 16 2025
Born and raised in Montreal, Raymond graduated from TMR High School in 1969 before slowly working his way West, attending Carlton University in Ottawa and Ryerson in Toronto where he earned a degree in Journalism. He spent many fruitful years working on publications at the Canadian Museums Association in Ottawa before heading out to Vancouver to manage Langara College’s 49th Avenue Press, an entity that did not survive long after he moved to Vancouver Island in 1992 to set up his own business, Bendall Books. He continued to publish text books and specialty books and oversee the website for BC Transfer Guide until suffering a debilitating stroke in 2003.
Raymond is survived by his wife, Mary, and daughter, Alison, his sister Julia (Steve), his brother, Tony, and his loving nieces, Heather and Jessica. He is also survived by kind neighbours at 920 Brulette Place. Thanks especially to Faith for caring tirelessly for his beloved cat, Simon, while Raymond battled with leukemia in hospital. Thanks, too, to Jill who remained his “case worker” for 20 years, well beyond the contract with VIHA.
There will be no service, as per Raymond’s instructions, but we will be gathering family and friends in his honour at a later date.
