Amazing Grace aka Viola Grace Spinks, nee Witham left us Monday January 1st with family by her side.
Mom was born December 17, 1918, in Polworth Saskatchewan to Ester and Simon Witham. She was
pre-deceased by all her brothers sisters and friends from those days except for Art Lundstrom who came
to live at the Wedgwood and be her neighbour 90 years later. Mom moved to Duncan 1936 and was married 1937 to best looking man around, Glen Spinks. They hada little farm on the end of Vimy road and raised their family of 5 children there until 1959 when they moved to Cowichan Bay and the subdivision developed and named after my father Glen and there they welcomed one more child.
If you needed someone to collect for Heart and Stroke, get groceries for the neighbours, teach you ceramics, flower making, cook clean, be a chauffeur and countless other things, mom was always willing to do her share and more. Her time at the Wedgwood was the best possible place for her to be for the past 17 years. Surrounded by a great staff and wonderful residents she again did her
part in teaching to arm knit and make pop can tabs into what ever you wanted. Her best experience in life came at 98 when she was awarded the LEAP award for Embracing Aging Passionately. And the trip to Kelowna in October with daughter Pauline and friend Ann was to bring a smile to face right to the end.
She was predeceased by her Grandson Michael Spinks, Husband Glen Spinks
and son Glen Spinks Jr. and special friend Stan Pimlot. Her family Robert Spinks
wife Carol and children Robert Spinks Jr. and Cynthia, Bill David and Irene, Kathy
Kuntz, Joanne Spinks, Patrick Spinks and Martine, Son James Spinks and wife
Doris, Son David Spinks and Roz Creed and children Dylan Spinks and Carter
Spinks, , daughter Lianna Benny and husband Bryan and children Christopher
and Amy Benny and daughter Pauline Cavanagh and husband Allen and children
Tom Cavanagh and Patti, Amanda Dalgity and Wayne, Sandi Goodman and Sean,
Great Grandchildren numbered 19 and Great Great Grandchildren 2 and she
loved everyone of her family like they were the most precious of jewels.
There will be no service but to honour her memory one day when buying a meal,
cup of coffee or tea, pay it forward. One day out of the blue a young man did
this for mom and she never forgot that. Also she always said that she wanted to
jump off Mt Prevost and go hang gliding on her 100th birthday, Well day or two
ago she laughed and said I won’t have to do this after all if I die. Someone else
will have to do it. I said I definitely wasn’t going to but Lianna and Patrick have
accepted the task. I am sure part of mom will be flying up there with them. Good
bye to an Amazing Grace.
