

Shirley Nance, 99, a child of God, passed over into Heaven on Nov. 18, 2011. Born May 19, 1912, she was a daughter of the late William Henry Doyle and Goldie Ethel Medlin Doyle. Shirley (also known as “MomMom”) lived all but the last three years of her life in Raleigh; she moved to live with her son Dick and his wife Barbara in August, 2008. They provided warm, safe and loving homes for her in Salem, VA and Dunedin, FL until she moved into Mease Continuing Care Center in Dunedin, where she was provided with excellent care.
Shirley is predeceased, in addition to her parents, by her husband Walter E. “Whitey” Nance, an infant daughter, Elizabeth “Betsy” Nance and a daughter-in-law, Molly Barnes Nance. She is also preceded in death by brothers John Doyle, Conan Doyle and Wilbur Doyle and by her sisters Ruth Doyle Duval, Mary Estelle Doyle and Phoebe Doyle Powers Medlin.
She is survived by two sisters -- Rowena Doyle Paulus (Charles) and Ethel Doyle Watkins; her sons Walter E. Nance Jr., Dr. Richard E. “Dick” Nance (Barbara) and by a daughter Shirley Nance Whitaker Sollars (Don). She is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and was excitedly awaiting the birth of her first great-great-grandchild in April 2012. She is also survived by many other loved family and friends.
A graveside funeral service will be held at Raleigh Memorial Park on Nov. 22, 2011 at 2:00 pm. Following the service, family and friends are invited to a reception at Shirley’s home hosted by her grand-daughter Kathy N. Boulden from 3:00 to 5:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Hayes Barton Baptist Church, 1800 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, NC 27608; or to Suncoast Hospice, 5771 Roosevelt Blvd, Clearwater, FL 33760.
