Dear Yvonne and Family:

I just wanted to say that I am sure the holidays were especially difficult for you all and I know your friends and family have kept you in their thoughts and prayers.  I know I have. 

I am still shaken by the passing of Thom.  I worked with Thom at Kemper, and he was a wonderful man- his warmth and caring came through even though the subject was usually insurance. 

I remember him telling a group of us about a pedicure that his daughters were going on about and he said, "Really? It's just your toenails- what's the big deal?"  We all cracked up! We were at business dinner and he was the president of the company, but he was so real and made everyone comfortable. 

Thom will be greatly missed. I have never met anyone like him.  My deepest sympathy to you all.

I, and my father and my brother, worked with Thom. My brother followed him from CNA to Kemper in Florida. He was a kind man, a generous man, a loving soul. He provided sound advice to me, especially as my father neared the end of his life and I needed sage wisdom, Thom gave it to me when my father could not.
Thom was that rare individual that loved people, his family above all. The world is a lesser place with his passing.

I was so shocked to hear of Thom's passing. I have known him for 16 years. I worked for/with him at CNA in the 1990s, as did my father and my brother. In fact, my brother followed him to Kemper Auto and Home (and I almost did the same). 
Thom was very generous with his time and his insightful advice. I frequently called him to discuss professional issues, especially after my father died. 
As many others have already said, as accomplished as he was professionally, his family always came first. On one occassion when I was asking his advice on a particularly thorny issue, he put down the phone to take a call from one of the kids - away at college - who wanted to discuss an exam she had just taken. That was Thom.
He told great stories with wonderful aphorisms. One of my favorites - when discussing whether a change in reporting relationships would solve a difficult personnel issue: "Moving a jar to a different shelf doesn't change it's contents." I use that one a lot.
He was a good man, a kind man, a generous man, and a loving soul. He will be missed.

I grew up with Thom in Hamilton, and was friends through junior high and high school, even spending the night on occaision.  We played basketball in the alleys and playgrounds of Lindenwald.  Though we lost contact many years ago, I am saddened at the news of his passing.  I'll always remember Thom as a quality man and a good friend from youth. Kelly and I enjoyed our times traveling the world with you and Thom on many great Kemper trips. I had so many wonderful momories working with Thom as a business associate. Dear Yvonne and family.

I am shocked and saddened by the passing of your dear Thom and Dad.  I cannot begin to tell you the importance this man has had on my and other's lives.   I am greatly sorry for your loss.

As a co-worker and friend, Thom was always there to give advice, counsel, friendship, and the extraordinary, expected humor.  Oh my, his stories were long - yes, but they were entertaining.  Thom always made everyone around him feel comfortable and confident.  I will miss him.

As passionate as Thom was about work, he always had more important things in his thoughts - yes, you, his family.  How proud he was to be married to a beautiful and loving wife.  How blessed he felt to have a strong, smart, athletic son.  The proud papa he was to have two perfectly beautiful, brilliant, loving daughters.  He had it all and he knew it.  Great thing was that he never took that for granted; he always had that gleam of a wonderful family life in his eye.

Thom will live on in my life and many others in the way we act, the way we interact with others, and the way we love our families.  He taught us great lessons in life - work hard, respect others, and enjoy life.  Don't take yourself too serious he would say, and of course, "Hey, this is not a dress rehearsal, Live life right"

Thom was a great guy.  I never saw him lose his cool over anything.  I remember to this day all of the good times we had hunting and fishing in the 60's and 70's.  He loved bird hunting so much he would call in sick on opening day in so he could go bird hunting in Chilicothe, Ohio.  

On one overnight fishing trip to Laughery Creek ,IN our group had great comradery.  That night, as we slept on the ground around the fire,  a field rat jumped onto my head which caused me to make a big fuss and awaken everyone.  Thom must have laughed for 10 minutes about the jumping rat.  He told me I just had a bad dream..

Please accept my sincere sympathy on the loss of a great man.  I served as a Director for the Adirondack Insurance Company and admired Thom's leadership and intellect.  Thom was very proud of the Adirondack and with his leadership the company became a leading market in NY.

I was shocked to hear about Thom's passing this week. There are things I have forgotten about my childhood but I will never forgot how welcome both Thom and Yvonne made me in their home when I was just a little kid, even when Jackie and I seemed to make every effort to create huge messes. He was a wonderful man who clearly loved his family very much. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

To Thom's Family,
I was very saddened and upset to hear of Thom's passing.  I worked for Thom as his Admin in Jacksonville.  Thom was such a wonderful person.  He made each person he came across feel important.  No matter how busy he was, he always had time for you, to hear about your family matters or work matters, it didn't matter.  He cared either way.  I remember once when I was having some car problems and we were talking about it in the office, he decided to go right outside and looked under the car to see what the problem was and what needed to happen to fix it.  I don't know what he planned on doing about it, but the fact that he stepped up, did something unexpected, that's just how he was.  That's part of what made him so wonderful.  
I know you all will miss him terribly, but I can only hope that hearing how much he meant to everyone will help you all heal.

To the McDaniel Family-
I was saddened to learn of Thom's passing.  I am a great fan of Thom in that most of us would like to be like him in how we treat other people. Thom was exceptional in many ways.  I first met him when I became a Kemper agent and went to a company meeting. I remarked to another Kemper employee that Thom did not seem like your typical company President in that he came off as
an incredibly nice person.  The employee told me "that's the way he is". He was very welcoming to me. He was an Insurance professional and was always seeking ways to improve products and our industry overall.  He was one of the more intelligent insurance people I have met during my 33 year career.  He will be missed by many but I am hopeful the way he conducted himself will be emulated by all who met him.  My sincere condolences to you all.

To all of Thom's family:  Needless to say, I was shocked to hear of Thom's passing.  I knew him from our representation as an Adirondack agency and from the day we first met, we hit it off right away.  Thom was the kind of guy who made you feel he had known you all along.  We also shared a mutual appreciation for vintage cars and I'll always remember the vintage car weekend in Watkins Glen the year that he and his company had a vendor's booth there.  We spent time together viewing and talking about vintage cars, including my MG which was on display there.  I know he enjoyed that weekend and I was happy that he was there.

Joan and I were truly saddened to hear of Thoms sudden passing. I have known Thom over 20 years especially during our years working closely together at Continental. We reconnected about two years ago when we purchased One Beacon and spoke to each othe often. He was one of the "good guys" you meet in life.I know Thom was enjoying his family and his interests especially fishing. As he said to me last week, "there are many trout in western New York that are waiting for me".
