Arrangements under the direction of Wood Funeral Home, East Aurora, New York.
Robert H. Davidson, a retired sales executive, died Saturday in his East Aurora home after a long illness. He was 89.
Born in Alliance, Ohio, he was a 1945 graduate of Alliance High School, served stateside in the Army Air Corps and earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Grove City College in Grove City, Pa., where he was a member of the varsity baseball, track and soccer teams. A standout infielder, he turned down a chance to try out with the Pittsburgh Pirates in order to start his business career.
Mr. Davidson joined the George Worthington Co. in Cleveland, a hardware wholesaler, as a sales representative, then was assigned to open a new sales district in Ann Arbor, Mich., where he became the company’s sales leader, winning numerous salesman of the year awards.
In 1967, he was promoted to director of sales at the company’s warehouse in Lansing, Mich. He returned to the main office in Cleveland in 1976 as vice president for sales. He retired in 1986 and moved to Fripp Island, S.C.
Golf carts are a major mode of transportation on the island and, after he took a course in repairing them, he and his wife established Davidson Sales and Service, which sold and serviced Club Car golf carts. They operated it for 15 years.
His wife of 52 years, the former Marilyn R. Buchholz, died in 2004.
Mr. Davidson moved from South Carolina to East Aurora at the end of 2009 and joined the East Aurora Country Club. He was a familiar figure in East Aurora driving a robin’s egg blue Thunderbird. He enjoyed golf, baseball and bridge.
Survivors include two sons, Bruce A. and Mark B.; a sister, Marjorie Azelvandre; and four grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in First Presbyterian Church, 9 Paine St., East Aurora.
