

Barry was born in Monticello, Georgia but moved to Connecticut with his Mom and two brothers at a very young age. The family resided in East Hartford and Barry graduated from Penny High School in 1967.
During his high school years he was a member of the popular band “The Classics,” playing for many school and social events in the area. He also played on his high school baseball team and football team.
Right out of high school, Barry enlisted in the United States Marine Corp and proudly served his country in the Vietnam War. In his late 30s, Barry became an avid tennis player and was a member of the USTA, competing in tournaments around the northeast. Prior to his retirement, Barry was employed for many years as a roofer with Hartford Roofing.
Barry is survived by his mother, Katherine Gartrell of Hartford, his son Forrest Ridley and Nikki Olsen of Colchester, Valerie Budil of Vernon who was his faithful companion of over 20 years, his brother Rufus Gartrell of Hartford, his sister Mary K. Cosme and husband Felix Cosme of Cromwell, several nephews, a niece and dear friends too many to mention. He also leaves his little grandson, Knox Ridley of Colchester, who held a very special place in his heart and his step granddaughter Kaitlin Olsen.
Services will be held this Saturday, April 29, 2017 at Newkirk and Whitney Funeral Home. Calling hours will be 10:00 – 11:30 am and will be immediately followed by a memorial service.
