

Fred Carleton Boyd, of East Hartford, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on December 12, 2016. He was born, Thursday November 1, 1934, in Boothbay Harbor, ME., son of the late Fred C. II and Constance (Hanson) Boyd, raised by his adoptive parents Millard "Doc" and Audrey (Patterson) Hanson in Maine and Glastonbury CT. He was a machinist and foreman at Pratt & Whitney for 38 years. He faithfully served his country in the United States Army. He was a life member of the Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks, a life member, Hy D. Davis Moose Legion #8 President, Legion Secretary, Assistant Legion Regional Director, State President, Deputy Supreme Governor, and International Legion Ritual Judge of The Loyal Order of the Moose, Past Governor & Administrator of the East Hartford Moose Lodge #1477 where he earned the Pilgrim Degree of Merit in 1999. He was also a member of the Columbia Lodge #25, A.F. & A.M. of Glastonbury. Fred earned the Thirty-third degree of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Life Member of the American Legion Post # 77, Life Member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter CT12, and a Lifetime member of the National Rifle Association of America. Fred and his fellow ritualists from the “Biggest Little Lodge in the East”, East Hartford Moose Lodge #1477, won the International Ritual Competition in 1970. During his formative years he worked in the logging country of northern Maine and while riding along in the logging boats gained the nickname of “Little Skipper” and is still known as “Skip” to his Down East family and friends. He grew up in Patten, ME and after moving several times with his parents he graduated from Glastonbury, CT High School in 1953. Fred lived in Connecticut the remainder of his life. His dedication to providing for his family and serving his community through the brotherhood of fraternal organizations that come to the aid of children and the infirmed sum up the driving force of his life. His beloved wife Barbara (Gosselin) Boyd predeceased him in 2013. He is survived by two sons, Todd A. Boyd and his wife Patricia and Christopher A. Boyd and his former wife Liliane Boyd, all of East Hartford, one sister Carol Marechal and her husband Marcel of Long Island, NY, five grandchildren, Richard, Jason, Amber, Alfred, and Victoria, and eight great-grandchildren, Andrew, Addison, Jason, Anthony, Jayde, Jacinda, Arianna, and John. He was predeceased by another son David C. Boyd. Fred’s Life Well Celebrated Service will take place on Friday December 16, 2016 at 11AM at the Newkirk & Whitney Funeral Home, 318 Burnside Avenue, East Hartford. Burial will follow with military honors in Hillside Cemetery, East Hartford. Visiting hours at the funeral home are Thursday from 4PM-8PM.
