

Gertrude Boyle, 94, widow of Allard Boyle, since 1987 of Norcoss, ME passed away peacefully on March 25, 2012 at St. Francis Hospital with family by her side. Gertrude was born on July 8, 1917 to the late Ralph and Edna (York) Boyington. She lived in Millinocket, ME before coming to Hartford at age 25 to work at Pratt and Whitney, settling in East Hartford in 1960 where she lived until 2009. After leaving her apartment in East Hartford, she spent her last years at Welles Country Village in Vernon, CT. Gertrude was employed by the Maple Hill Restaurant for many years followed by the Buckboard Restaurant in Glastonbury, CT retiring in 1979. After retirement, Gertrude worked for many years as an attendant at the Laundromat of East Hartford Estates. She was a parishioner of the New Covenant Methodist Church. She enjoyed gardening and baking and spent most of her time with her family, grandchildren and friends. She was loved by many and made many friends over the years, always caring deeply for those around her and wanting to take care of them. She will be most remembered for her green thumb and as an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and UCONN Husky women’s team. Gertrude is survived and will be dearly missed by her daughter, Mary Gardner and her husband Michael Gardner of Vernon, her sister-in-law and long-time friend, Eleanor Boyle of West Hartford, CT, her brother, Ralph “Cecil” Boyington of Milford, ME, her granddaughter, Jennifer Ambrose and her husband, James Ambrose of New Britain, her grandson, Kevin Gardner and Tanya Wells of Manchester, her great-grandchildren Janae Ambrose and Justin Gardner, her daughter-in-law Patricia Boyle and her children, Lisa and Shane and many special nieces and nephews, dear friends and neighbors. Gertrude is predeceased by her son, Michael Boyle, her sisters Rebecca Neal and Thelma Smith and her brother, Bennie Boyington. A visiting hour will be from 9:30-10:30AM on Thursday March 29, at the Newkirk & Whitney Funeral Home, 318 Burnside Avenue, East Hartford, followed by services at 11AM in the New Covenant United Methodist Church, 16 Church St. East Hartford. Burial will follow in St. Augustine Cemetery in Glastonbury.
