East Hartford, CT, passed away on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, at the age of 83. He was born on May 9, 1941, in Woodsville, NH and grew up in Bradford, VT. He graduated from the Vermont Bradford Academy Class of 1959. He was part of the Apprenticeship Program at Pratt & Whitney where he became an Engineer and later worked for International Fuel Cells. He is preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence Alvah Wakefield and Olive Davis Wakefield. He is survived by his wife, Sharon Wakefield, daughter Leslie Weber and her spouse Joseph, daughter Rachael Jackson and her husband Aaron, his four grandchildren, Olivia, Kaitlyn, Cole and Christopher along with his brother Nathan Wakefield, his nephews and several cousins. He was actively involved in hunting, fishing, golf, his Masonic Chapter, and any type of crossword or traditional type of puzzle. He loved reading and history, particularly the Civil War era and Abraham Lincoln. If you ever needed to find Jack, he’d either be on his front porch enjoying the outside listening to music or the NPR program “Car Talk” with the “Click and Clack” brothers, or at his favorite place on Earth, Camp Ferdinand, in Ferdinand, VT enjoying his brother’s company, drinking Schaefer, and being off the grid in nature, looking for deer, bears or moose. Jack was always ready with a joke or quit whit to lighten any situation. You could also find him dancing with his daughters in his dining room to oldies music and serenading his family with his best version of the song: “It’s Hard to Be humble” by Mac Davis. You could also hear him continuously say “Lord, love a duck” and “Good lord willing, the creek don’t rise.”
Family and friends may pay their respects on Friday, November 1, 2024, from 4pm – 7pm at Newkirk & Whitney Funeral Home, 318 Burnside Ave., East Hartford, CT. Later this year, Jack will be buried in Bradford, VT at a private family gathering. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in his name to the Macular Degeneration Association (https://macularhope.org/).
