It is with heavy hearts, and slightly lighter Amazon delivery schedules, that we announce the passing of Jorja Henderson on July 15, 2025. She was taken from us far too soon, and we're pretty sure even her flowers are mourning.
Born and raised in East Hartford, Connecticut, Jorja was a true original. She was predeceased by her parents George and Marjory "Brownie" Zervas. Sunshine, salty air, time with her family and a good four-letter word were some of her favorite things. Jorja lived her life with passion, purpose, and just the right amount of sass. She was kind, brave, smart, and more stubborn than a New England winter, and we wouldn't have it any other way.
Jorja was one of Amazon's most loyal customers, often shopping late into the night, only to send her family out the next day to return it all. We're genuinely concerned her delivery driver may need a support group. She struck up conversations with strangers like they were old friends, and if you crossed her path, you probably got a compliment (and maybe a reality check). In her spare time, she volunteered with many different organizations. Her greatest pride, however, was founding Wishes Come True, an organization she started with a group of friends to raise funds in support of Make-A-Wish.
She was the queen of sending funny and inspirational reels to her kids and grandson. During her daughters' daily commutes, she kept them company with advice, laughter, or simply a listening ear. She loved her flowers almost as fiercely as she loved her family. She swore like a sailor, which is something she wore like a badge of honor.
Jorja leaves behind her devoted husband, Doug; her daughters Erin Hazzard (married to Jeff) of Lebanon, CT, and Julia Stavola (married to Aaron) of East Hartford, CT, both of whom inherited her strength, sass, communication skills and zero-tolerance policy for nonsense. She is also survived by her stepson Toby, and his children Sarah and David.
She leaves behind her beloved grandson Lukas, who shared a bond with her that defied description and distance. She was his biggest supporter and loved him endlessly. She is also survived by her baby brother Brad Zervas (married to Leticia) of South Carolina, her niece Maya, nephew Pablo, and many extended family members. And of course, her dog Bella.
Jorja lived with her heart on her sleeve. If she loved you, you would know it. And if she didn't? Well... you knew that too. She taught us all to speak up, stand tall, and love fiercely. She'd want to be remembered as someone who laughed hard, loved her family and friends deeply, and made life just a little brighter (and louder) for everyone lucky enough to know her.
In lieu of flowers, talk to a stranger, compliment someone's outfit, return that Amazon package you forgot about, and for heaven's sake, don't take anyone's nonsense!
Memorial services will be held at Newkirk & Whitney Funeral Home, located at 318 Burnside Avenue in East Hartford, on Sunday August 3rd from 12-2 pm, with a prayer service taking place at 1:30 pm. Please join us after the services at 3:00 pm for a Celebration of Life at the Knights of Columbus, 1831 Main St. East Hartford, CT.
