Albert was born into a large Italian family on August 6, 1932 in Detroit, Michigan. His father had emigrated from Bari, Italy. He attended Berkley High School and then Cass Tech High School, where he studied music with many future jazz stars. He formed a band at age 15. After marrying Dora Favale, he earned his B.A. in Anthropology at Wayne State University. In 1956, they welcomed their son, Marcus. Al received his M.A. and Ph.D. in Philosophy at the University of Michigan. A life-long Civil Rights advocate, he helped efforts to de-segregate housing in Ann Arbor.
After a divorce, he was hired by the Michigan State University Philosophy Department. During the Vietnam War protests there, he met and married Beth Greer in 1970. He then won the Teacher-Scholar Award for developing a course in African-American philosophy. Sons, Carl and Corey, were born in 1974 and 1983. While on the East Lansing Arts Commission in 1996, he founded the Summer Solstice Jazz Festival, now in its 26th year. He also was a board member of JAMM (Jazz Alliance of Mid-MI).
Albert's passions included teaching, daily jogging/walking, political activism for justice and peace, playing saxophones and singing with the Cafagna Trio for dances and celebrations, M.S.U. Jazz Studies concerts, jazz festivals and cruises, driving his Morgan sportscar, the Florida beach condo, following Spartan and Detroit sports, Edgewood United Church membership and choir, and enjoying his extended family. Albert (and Beth) received the East Lansing Crystal Award in 2006 and the East Lansing Educational Foundation Community Service Award in 2016.
Al was known for his beautiful smile, friendly and caring nature, optimism, and generosity. He was a Red Cross 10-gallon blood donor! Despite many medical challenges, he was always grateful and called himself a lucky, lucky man.
Albert was predeceased by his parents, Anna and Michelangelo; brothers, Don and Michael; and his beloved son, Corey. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Beth; sons, Marcus and Carl (Kati), Noelle Owens; six nieces and nephews; six grandchildren; and many Cafagna and Corona cousins.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, August 26, 2022 at 4 pm at Edgewood United Church, 469 North Hagadorn, East Lansing, MI 48823.
